Autism
As Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The
result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism and its associated behaviors
have been estimated to occur in as many as 2 to 6 in 1,000 individuals (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention 2001).
Every person with autism is an individual, and like all individuals, has a unique personality and combination
of characteristics. The Link On Learning unique environment can address this unique personality and help
the child gain self esteem and skills. The use of audio with visual reinforcer's teach to the strengths of the
autistic child.
One such case study is Joey a student that has been using the Linkonlearning system since January
2004, his parents were unaware of his true abilities but as they worked with him through the system,
they see a growth in Joey that encourages them and him towards a brighter future.
As a parent of a six year old autistic child, the computer is invaluable to teaching him certain skills. He
has been working with computers since age two. The Linkonlearning program was so easy to set up for
him and taught to his strengths. He was able to understand the written directions with the audio
reinforcement. I could adjust the assignments to his level to ensure he was continuing to be challenged,
but not missing out on comprehension skill development. I really enjoyed watching him navigate the
program with confidence. Autistic children depend quit a bit on learning by route, the Link On Learning
program allowed me through there unique beginning, intermediate and advance levels for each lesson,
to have him work on skills repetitively while raising the expectations.
